Installation of dash cams in taxis made compulsory

Taxi regulations have been amended to make the installation of dash cameras in taxis compulsory.

The amendments to the regulations gazetted on Tuesday will come into force six months from the date of gazetting.

According to the new regulations, the video recorded on dash cameras must be stored for a period of seven days.

The amendments also make it mandatory to display the taxi fares in view of passengers. Taxis are also required to be air-conditioned. If the AC is not working, passengers should be informed until the problem is resolved, and taxi windows should be kept open for ventilation.

The amendments to the regulations also include some requirements for taxi service providers who are not affiliated with a taxi center. The rule requires private hire taxi operators to update their websites or apps in accordance with the regulations relevant to them within three months of its completion.

Changes have been brought to taxi regulations while the government is preparing to launch mini-bus services in Male' City and some islands.
