The Parliament on Wednesday approved the dismissal of Sergeant at Arms Mohamed Haleem.
Halee was placed on paid suspension 19 months ago, on January 27, 2021. He was suspended when the Parliament began looking into allegations that he had attempted to bug the offices of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament.
The Parliament's General Committee looked into the matter and asked for the Parliament's vote on Haleem's dismissal. While 25 members voted to oust Haleem, no members voted against it. One member abstained from the vote.
The post of Sergeant at Arms was created in 2013 when the current Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid was the Speaker of Parliament. The Sergeant at Arms is in charge of the Parliament's security. Haleem was appointed as the first Sergeant at Arms of the parliament on October 31, 2013. He is a retired officer who previously served in the MNDF.
