'Have not been instructed by a foreign country to imprison Yameen'

The Foreign Ministry has denied reports that a foreign party informed the President to imprison former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom at a meeting attended by Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid is currently on an official visit to India. His visit coincides with an unofficial visit to the country by Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaker Nasheed and Minister Shahid Monday met with Indi's External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar. It was reported that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih attended the meeting via video conference and that the President was asked to jail former President Yameen by Indian officials.

The Foreign Ministry denied the allegations and said that Minister Shahid is currently on a visit to India in the capacity of the President of the UN General Assembly. The reports that the President was instructed by a foreign official to imprison Yameen at a meeting attended by Shahid are false, the ministry said. The ministry added that the report on the matter is untrue and irresponsible and goes against journalism standards.

The Foreign Ministry has asked the media to be responsible and provide accurate information so that it does not create doubt among the country's people.
