President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has proposed 39 recommendations to prevent an incident such as the International Yoga Day unrest.
On June 21, a group stormed the National Stadium while an event to mark International Yoga Day was ongoing. The clashes broke out while foreign ambassadors and dignitaries, and government officials were participating in the event. Those who stormed the event attacked some participants of the event and caused damage to property. Twenty-one people, including two religious scholars, were arrested following the clashes.
The President formed a special sub-committee of the Cabinet to investigate the Yoga Day clashes. The Cabinet on Tuesday discussed the findings of the Cabinet subcommittee investigation.
Deliberations at the meeting centered on the 39 recommendations in five areas proposed in the investigative report. They relate to strengthening policies governing security operations, resolving religious disharmony, organizing and holding events, ensuring accountability of responsible parties, and identifying and addressing threats to national security.
Upon deliberations with his Cabinet at the meeting, the President decided to instruct relevant stakeholders to initiate and implement the recommendations made in the investigative report.
