HDC terminates water theme park agreement

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has terminated the agreement with Waterfront Hotel and Leisure Company for the construction of a water theme park and city hotel in Hulhumale'.

In 2017, the company was awarded the contract to build a $25 million (about MVR 385.5 million) water theme park and a city hotel in Hulhumale'. On August 22, HDC terminated the contract with the company and sent a notice as the company had not done adequate work on the project in the one year granted to do the work and for failing to continue work on the project. The notice also ordered the property to be handed over to HDC within 30 days from the date of termination of the agreement.

The HDC had earlier asked the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to expedite its investigation into possible corruption in awarding the water theme park project to Waterfront Hotel and Leisure Company.

Following the cancellation of the agreement, the Waterfront Company filed a civil suit seeking an interim order to delay compliance on HDC's notice until the ACC decides on the matter. The contractor told the court that HDC’s actions could cause irrecoverable damage to the company, pending a court ruling on the matter. However, the HDC argued that the losses the corporation would suffer would be greater if such an order was issued.

Civil Court Judge Rizmeena Idris ruled that a stay order could not be issued as per the Waterfront Company's request as the company had failed to show sufficient reasons to issue the order.

The water theme park was being developed on a beachfront property in Huhumale'. The plans for the theme park included water slides and children's pools, bumper boats, a water house, water rollers, water gyros, aqua loops, and a fountain square. The plans also included a 50-room, six-story city hotel to provide cheap rooms for locals. The project, which was implemented during the administration of former President Abdullah Yameen, has not been continued since the change of government.
