Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed's brother, Nazim Abdul Sattar, has been sentenced to four months under house arrest after pleading guilty to sexual misconduct involving a Bangladeshi citizen.
A Bangladeshi national, MD Alamgir, filmed himself having homosexual relations with several local men, including politicians, prominent businessmen, and law enforcement officials. Some of these videos were leaked on social media platforms. While several of these men have been identified, charges have been raised against three people thus far, including Nazim Abdul Sattar, former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed, and police DED officer Abdul Rahman Rafiu. On August 31, Alamgir was found guilty of three counts of homosexual relations and has been sentenced to seven months and six days in jail.
Nazim was charged with homosexuality in connection to the case. While his trial began at the Criminal Court on Sunday, Nazim admitted that he had an immoral relationship with Alamgir but said he had not fornicated with him. Due to his admission of guilt, the presiding judge said the case would be decided expeditiously.
At Thursday's sentencing hearing, the Criminal Court gave Nazim a light sentence as he had no previous criminal record and had confessed to wrongdoing and repented. He was sentenced to one month and 28 days in jail. However, when requested to change his sentence to home arrest, the court decided that he would be under home arrest for three months and 26 days.
Ahead of his sentencing hearing, Nazim issued a statement admitting his guilt and sought public forgiveness. In his statement, Nazim said he had repented for his sin.
