COVID-19: Econ Ministry opens application for financial assistance

The Economic Ministry has opened applications for self-employed people whose income was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to apply for financial assistance.

The financial assistance program is being implemented jointly by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the World Bank under the "COVID-19 Emergency Income Support Project."

The program aims to provide financial assistance and training opportunities to those whose work came to a stop or whose income was adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eligible recipients will be awarded up to MVR 60,000. A training program conducted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs is required as a condition of receiving the assistance.

Financial assistance will be provided for the following areas:

Food Production
Handmade work
Beauty and makeup
Photography and Videography
Sewing and textiles
Information Communication Technology
Creative Arts and Music
Sports and Fitness

The program will open 500 opportunities in the first phase. Of these opportunities, 40 percent are reserved for women.

Applications for the aid should be submitted online through the Job Center portal of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Persons eligible for assistance

- Must have been earning income from self-employment for at least six months till July 1 this year
- Must not have paid employment in the past four weeks or, if employed, be working more than 20 hours per week

Details of the program and application forms and procedures to be followed have been made public by the Ministry. The Job Center will continue to publish the process followed in the evaluation of applications received.

Applications are open until Monday, October 31.
