PPM submits 10,000 membership forms to EC

The opposing Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) has submitted membership forms of 10,000 newly joined party members to the Elections Commission.

Led by PPM's coalition partner, PNC's President Abdul Raheem Abdulla, senior PPM and PNC officials arrived at the Election Commission on Wednesday to submit the forms. The forms were handed over to the President of the Election Commission, Fuwad Thawfeek.

PPM has made it a requirement that all candidates contesting for the post of president of a constituency in its internal elections must submit 50 forms and that a candidate for the post of vice-president must submit 25 forms to become eligible for the election,

Speaking to AVAS, PPM's Vice President and Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam said the newly submitted forms were received by the party office from the candidates contesting the party's internal elections. According to him, the 10,000 forms submitted on Wednesday were validated by the party office.

"We still have about 2,000 forms. After verifying the validity of the forms, we will submit them to the commission very soon," he said.

PPM was registered as a political party on October 27, 2011. As per the most recent party registry published on the Election Commission's website, PPM currently has 33,264 members. The register was last updated on July 31.
