MTCC completes Phase II of Himmafushi Harbour Development

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed the second phase of the Hinmafushi Harbour Development project.

The project, which cost MVR 5.3 million from the state budget, was awarded to MTCC on December 29, 2019. The project reached completion on September 30.

The second phase of the Hinmafushi Harbour Construction included dredging operations of 19,895cbm as part of the harbor, dredging operations of a 9,900cbm channel, installation of concrete pavement of 1,443sqm for the second phase and 1,200sqm for the first phase.

The project's scope also includes a 311m revetment, the construction of a 251m quay wall, a 15m breakwater, the construction of a 25m x 6m bridge, the construction of a 63m x 4m jetty, the installation of harbor streetlights, navigation lights and mooring blocks.

With a population of about 1,130, Hinmafushi is a popular local tourism destination. Along with local tourism, reef fishing has expanded, and the popularity of big game fishing and excursions has increased dramatically. The lack of a large harbor on the island caused difficulties for the island's residents and visitors.

However, with the new harbor, island residents will get many conveniences and relief, MTCC said. MTCC also believes that the harbor will create more space, and the increasing number of vessels will be able to approach the island easily.

"The development and completion of this harbor is an important project that will benefit the people of Himmafushi from an economic point of view," MTCC said.
