Pakistanis aboard fishing vessel being sent back to country

The Pakistan High Commission in the Maldives has said that ten Pakistanis on board the ship that ran aground GDh. Nadella reef are being sent back to Pakistan.

The ship carrying Pakistanis ran aground on Nadella reef on October 7. The vessel was a net-fishing vessel, the Nadella Council said earlier. All ten people on board were taken to Nadella and are now in police custody.

Pakistan High Commissioner to the Maldives, Ether Mukhtar, told AVAS on Wednesday that the ten people are in good health and that arrangements are being made to take them back to Pakistan. They will be transported to Male' on Thursday, he said.

The High Commissioner said the ship ran aground after an engine problem caused it to be pulled towards the shore by the force of the current and wind.

"The ship entered Maldivian waters unintentionally. It drifted into Maldivian waters due to an engine problem," Mukhtar said.

The High Commissioner thanked the people of Nadella and Thinadhoo for the assistance provided to the Pakistanis.
