The state-owned fish company, MIFCO, and the national shipping company, Maldives State Shipping (MSS), jointly export 15 containers of fish per month, MSS has said.
MSS' Commercial and Sales Manager Thoha Mohamed told AVAS that the fish export operation started by the company in collaboration with MIFCO is going on successfully.
In this regard, 10-15 containers of fish are being exported to various foreign countries per month, said Thoha. He said the company exports fish to several countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia.
Before beginning the fish export operation, MIFCO had said 30 refrigerated shipping containers would be obtained for the operation and that the 40-foot containers would each have a capacity of 25 tonnes of fish. Therefore, if MSS exports 15 containers of fish per month, this adds up to 375 tonnes of fish per month.
The objective of the fish export operation is to buy and export fish and ensure fair prices until fish storage capacity is established in Felivaru island.
MSS has three vessels for importing and exporting goods to and from foreign countries. They are two container ships and one bulk ship.
