The Maldives is preparing to welcome its 1.6 millionth tourist for the year on Tuesday.

The Maldives government set a target to host 1.6 million tourists this year. According to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), this target will be achieved on Tuesday.

Speaking to AVAS, MMPRC's Managing Director Thoyyib Mohamed said the 1.6 millionth tourist is expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon. Many preparations are being made to welcome the tourist, he said.

"We are preparing to welcome the 1.6 millionth tourist with Maldivian cultural activities," Thoyyib said.

The budget for the current year estimates that 1,632,432 million tourists will visit the Maldives this year in moderate conditions and 1,835,047 in best conditions. The worst-case estimate of 1,520,060 million tourists was met earlier this month. As of December 6, 1,524,265 million tourists visited the Maldives, according to the Tourism Ministry.

India is now the strongest source market for Maldives tourism. While Indian tourists accounted for 14.1 percent of the total number of tourists visiting Maldives this year, Russia followed behind, accounting for 12.2 percent of tourist arrivals.
