Cancer hospital construction to begin next year

The President's Office has announced that the construction of a cancer hospital in L. Gan will start next year.

During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to the Maldives in 2019, he announced that a special cancer hospital would be built in the Maldives with Indian assistance. However, no practical efforts have been made to make the project a reality until now.

Presidential Spokesperson Miuwan Mohamed told AVAS today that the detailed project review of the cancer hospital is currently underway. The design work will then begin, and once that is complete, the practical work of construction will begin.

An Indian team arrived in September 2021 to start work on the project funded under an $800 million line of credit. The government had earlier said the work would start mid this year. However, the President's Office said the work was delayed because of the difficulties faced by companies due to changes in the global economy.

While a cancer hospital is being developed in L. Gan, the island is also among five islands where the government is developing tertiary hospitals.
