Contesting with intention to establish Islamic gov't: Nasheed

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has said he wishes to contest the 2023 Presidential Election to establish an Islamic government in the Maldives. Nasheed made the statement at a special rally held at Sultan Park on Wednesday to officially launch his MDP primary campaign.

The main ruling party has scheduled its presidential primary for January 28, in which Nasheed will be going head-to-head with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

During the rally, Nasheed heavily criticized President Solih, and said President Solih failed to achieve most of the important goals in the manifesto. While President Solih was unable to complete the manifesto, he did not even "react" to it, said Naheed.

Nasheed's choice of words was an indirect reference to First Lady Fazna Ahmed stating in an interview that President Solih would not "react" immediately and comment on significant issues in his personal life.

Nasheed further said President Soli had been unsuccessful in investigating the cases of corrupt officials and recovering the money lost from the state, converting schools to single-session schools, building neighborhood fish factories, providing fair prices to fishermen, and issuing land plots from islands to island residents within six months of taking office. Nasheed said President Solih's failure to achieve these targets was the main reason he was running for president.

"I am running with the intention of establishing an Islamic government in the Maldives once again - to establish the government we want," Nasheed said.
