The permanent list of eligible voters for the MDP presidential primary has been released, adding 1,091 names to the interim list.
According to the permanent voters' list publicized by the main-ruling party, 57,255 people will be able to vote in the party's presidential primary slated for January 28, compared to the 56,164 people listed in the provisional list.
In MDP's Chairperson election held last year, 94,211 people were eligible to vote in the election. The voter turnout for the election was 48,107. The party's new leadership recently removed 39,910 people from the party's registry, stating that the new register was updated to match with the party's register maintained by the Elections Commission.
The MDP members removed from the register include members registered with other political parties. The old register had members registered to other parties as follows:
PPM - 6,357 members
JP - 3,788 members
MTD - 1,543 members,
MDA - 3,086 members
MRM - 928 members
Adhaalath Party - 1,711 members
Congress Party - 58 Members
MSDP - 875 members
DRP - 389 members
MNP - 3,845 members
PNC - 698 members
The MDP presidential primary is being contested by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and MDP's President and Parliament Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed. President Nasheed will be candidate number one, while President Solih will contest as candidate number two.
