Funds lost to corruption not recovered due to lack of effort: Nasheed

Parliament Speaker and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) 's presidential primary candidate, Mohamed Nasheed, has said the state funds lost in the MMPRC scandal have not been recovered as the government has made no efforts to recover it.

Speaking at a campaign rally held in N. Lhohi on Monday, Nasheed said MDP pledged to recover the funds lost in the biggest corruption scandal recorded in the country's history. However, not a single penny has been recovered to date, and this is unacceptable to MDP members, he said.

Nasheed said MDP members are now distancing themselves from the government because of theft, corruption, and fraud in the government. He said MDP was formed to oppose such things.

Nasheed further said the MDP has always talked about injustice and corruption. The MDP wants to stop corruption because it is an obstacle to development, he said.

The MDP President went on to say that the people paid taxes to the government to spend on the people's needs in a transparent manner. The lack of action when tax money is not spent the way it is intended to and is taken advantage of, is a grave concern, he said.

Nasheed said the people of the Maldives and party members are aware of the happenings in the country. He said it is unacceptable that it takes five years to complete sewerage projects in islands while 200-million dollar projects are completed in uninhabited islands within a year.
