Tourist arrivals increase by 11 percent

The number of tourists that visited the Maldives as of the 8th of this month was up 11 percent over the same period last year.

According to the statistics released by the Tourism Ministry, 42,404 tourists visited the Maldives as of the 8th of this month. Statistics show 38,181 tourists visited the Maldives during the same period last year.

Russia is the current leading tourist market. Russian tourists accounted for 19.9 percent of the total, with 8,442 arrivals. Italy followed behind with 5,792 tourists, accounting for 13.7 percent of arrivals.

India was the largest tourist source market for the Maldives last year. Thus far this year, The Maldives has received 3,356 tourists from India.

The UK, Germany, the US, France, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, and Australia are among the next most popular source markets. The next most number of tourists came from the UK, Germany, the US, France, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, and Australia.

China was one of the largest source markets for Maldives tourism before the COVID-19 pandemic. After closing international borders due to the pandemic, China on Sunday re-opened its borders, which would significantly increase tourist arrivals to the Maldives.
