Five resorts opened last year, nine to open this year

Five resorts were opened in the Maldives last year, statistics have shown.

According to the Tourism Ministry, the five resorts that were opened last year include three in Kaafu atoll and one each in Meemu atoll and Raa atoll. The resorts opened in Kaafu atoll are Aanugandu Island, Hilton Maldives Ameengiri, and Oaga Art Resort. The other two resorts opened are R. Aleelaa Kothaifaru Maldives and M. Madifushi Private Island.

Nine resorts are scheduled to open in the Maldives this year. These include two resorts in the Baa atoll, two in Kaafu atoll, two in Lhaviyani atoll, and one each in Raa, Vaanu, and Alif Dhaalu atoll.

These resorts include an island leased for resort development by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration, K. Kasanfaru.

According to the Tourism Ministry, there are currently 172 resorts in the Maldives, of which 168 are in operation. A total of 41,049 beds are being used for tourism in 168 resorts.
