The picnic island developed for Male' city residents, K. Kudagiri, will be opened on February 10.
An HDC official confirmed that the long-anticipated picnic island would be open to the public next week.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih made a presidential pledge to develop a picnic island for the people living in the Male' area. In 2019, the government designated a lagoon to develop the island near Male'. The Planning Ministry awarded the project to MTCC in 2021 to dredge the lagoon and develop the picnic island. The work was awarded to be completed in 150 days at a cost of MVR 41.4 million. While eight hectares of land were dredged for the project, the scope of the project also included a 397.27-meter rock breakwater and 428.32-meter rock groyne.
While the development of Kudagiri has now reached completion, all necessary basic services have been established on the island, including toilets, changing rooms, and nursing rooms. The island also boasts a mosque, a clinic, a convenience store, and a retail store, as well as a cafe. The state-owned utility company, FENAKA Corporation, provides water and electricity services to the island.
Departure arrangements are available to Kudagiri from Male' and Hulhumale' The journey will take only 15 minutes.
A variety of activities will be available on the island when it opens its doors to the public. Although designated as a picnic island, it will also accommodate weddings, birthday parties, gatherings, and corporate events.
