Trivandrum-Hanimaadhoo flights to be temporarily suspended

Flights between Hanimaadhoo and Trivandrum, India, will be temporarily suspended.

JMC Projects Limited of India was awarded the contract for the development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport on September 25 last year. The practical work of developing the Hanimaadhoo International Airport started on January 18. The project will expand the existing 1.8 km runway in Hanimaadhoo to 2.24 km. A terminal that can accommodate 1.3 million passengers annually will also be built. In addition, the Hanimaadhoo airport will have a 2461 metric tonne oil storage facility.

The operator of the national carrier Maldivian, Island Aviation Service (IAS), said in a statement Wednesday that it has decided to suspend Hanimaadhoo-Trivandrum flights from March 1 as the practical work of Hanimaadhoo airport development is underway.

The Trivandrum - Hanimaadhoo flights are operated at night. IAS said the night flights are being canceled as airport development work will be carried out every night from 8:00 m to 8:00 am.

Island Aviation has asked those who have booked flights after March 1 to contact Maldivian to rearrange their flights.
