The salaries of healthcare workers will be increased from May this year, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said. The president made the announcement in his yearly inaugural address at the Parliament on Monday.
The president said all government employees would be eligible for a 35 percent civil service allowance from May 1, 2023, along with wage raises for healthcare sector staff. He added that, starting in March, university employees' salaries would also notice a positive shift in their wages and that once the pay harmonization process is complete, all civil service employees will benefit from pay raises.
"Next March, the salaries of the university sector employees will also be improved. When the pay harmonization is completed, it would include the judicial sector, imams, muezzins, and almost all civil service employees," he said.
Increasing the salaries of education and health workers is a presidential promise. From May 2022, the salary of education employees has been increased. MVR 493 million has been allocated in the budget for this year for the salary increase of healthcare workers. This includes salary increases for doctors and nurses and an additional 1,000 health workers.
