MP Jabir resigns from DRP

Kaashidhoo MP, Abdulla Jabir, has resigned as Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP)'s leader and member. Jabir's resignation comes amid the Election Commission (EC)'s decision to dissolve DRP.

While a 3,000-member minimum membership is required to maintain a political party on the party registry, DRP's membership dipped below the amount. The party was, therefore, given a three-month duration to increase its membership to at least 3,000. The party failed to register the required number of members when the deadline ended on October 25, 2022, prompting EC's decision to dissolve DRP. The EC instructed DRP not to conduct any political activities in the party's name and to complete the dissolution procedure as per the Political Parties Act.

Following EC's decision, DRP filed a petition in the High Court under the Political Parties Act. However, the High Court did not accept the case.

The DRP was formed on July 21, 2005, by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
