The Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has opened the opportunity to contest the party's primary for the Guraidhoo constituency by-election.
The Guraidhoo constituency Parliament seat became vacant with the death of Guraidhoo MP Ibrahim Riza last Thursday. Riza passed away while undergoing treatment for an intestinal ailment in Malaysia.
The main-ruling MDP today announced that forms can be submitted to contest the primary from today until 4:00 pm on March 2. Party members who wish to contest the primary must submit a 100-member support form indicating their support for the candidate.
The Elections Commission (EC) has scheduled to hold the Guraidhoo by-election on April 15. Article 79 of the Constitution states that a member of Parliament shall be elected to a seat vacant seat within 60 days from the date of vacancy.
