The police have revealed the identity of a suspect arrested for allegedly importing goods to the Maldives by deceiving foreign companies.
According to the police, the suspect is Hussain Shafiu of Male' City. Shifau was arrested on February 28 under a court order.
Police told the court Hussain Shifau had been involved in fraud cases in the past, and in the recent case, he had imported fruits and vegetables worth more than MVR 3 million through fraudulent means.
Police said the bank had confirmed that Shifau had sent invalid TTs to buy goods from abroad. He also used invalid TTs to do business on several occasions, police said. Some of the TTs sent by Shifau used the name of a business he is associated with, and his name and phone number.
Police said they are investigating other similar cases against Shifau. Others people are also suspected of being involved in the case.
