The government has awarded a contract to redesign the National Identity Card.
The Department of National Registration (DNR) awarded the contract to Encrea Pvt Ltd, the company which won first place among the designs submitted in an open call for the ID card redesign.
The DNR said the department has decided to change and redesign the ID card and introduce a smart ID card with advanced security features, following a Cabinet decision in February to establish a digital identity system in the Maldives.
Encrea Pvt Ltd, which has been commissioned to change the design of the ID card, does similar work extensively in the Maldives. The company has done a lot of nationally-recognized work.
The current ID card was introduced in 1984 during the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
