JP leader to decide on presidential election this month

Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim will decide whether to contest this year's presidential election within the month.

The JP council has given the power to the party leader to make decisions regarding the presidential election and form a coalition. The JP council passed a resolution moved by councilor Mohamed Nazil at its council meeting held on March 6. The resolution was passed unanimously by the members present at the council meeting. AVAS has learned that as per the decision, Qasim would decide whether to contest the presidential election within this month.

The JP Congress recommended the party's council field its own candidate for the upcoming presidential election. While President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has attained the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s presidential ticket, Maldives National Party (MNP)'s President Mohamed Nazim will contest the election. Former Home Minister Umar Naseer and former Attorney General Dr. Mohamed Munavvar have also announced their intention to contest the election.

Meanwhile, the opposing PPM has presented its presidential ticket to former President Abdulla Yameen. However, Yameen is currently barred from contesting an election as he is serving a sentence on a money laundering charge. He cannot contest the election unless a higher court quashes the Criminal Court verdict.
