PPM-PNC coalition to hold protest across the Maldives

The opposing PPM-PNC has decided to hold a protest in all inhabited islands of the Maldives, calling for the release of their leader, former President Abdullah Yameen.

The Criminal Court, on December 25 last year, convicted President Yameen of accepting bribes and money laundering and sentenced him to 11 years in jail. President Yameen will not be able to contest the upcoming presidential election until the Criminal Court's conviction is quashed by a higher court.

Speaking to the press, senior PPM member and former Hoarafushi MP Mohamed Ismail said the protest for Yameen's release is scheduled to start at 4:00 pm on Friday. The protest in Male' will begin at the Rasfannu beach area, where it will kick off with a 'Maahefun' gathering.

The opposition coalition has previously staged protests in all inhabited islands of the Maldives, calling for the release of President Yameen. Serial protests are held in Male' city every night.

The opposition coalition has decided to continue its serial protests during the month of Ramadan. However, the protests will not take place during the last ten days of the holy month.
