Presidential Guard's Commandant suspended

The Commandant of the Presidential Guard, Colonel Abdulla Ibrahim, has been suspended.

Colonel Abdulla's suspension comes while the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) investigates the obstruction of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's motorcade during the opposing PPM's protest on Monday night.

PPM holds its serial protests calling for the release of their jailed leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, outside their office on Boduthakurufaanu Magu every night. On Monday night, opposition coalition supporters blocked the President's motorcade while it was traveling along Boduthakurufaanu Magu following a function at Hulhumale' Umar Zahir Building. The motorcade had to turn back as it could not move forward along the road.

The MNDF has formed a special committee to investigate the incident. The committee was formed by Defense Minister Maria Ahmed Dii in consultation with the MNDF leadership. As per the rules and regulations of MNDF, the Presidential Guard'ss Commanding Officer, Colonel Abdulla Ibrahim, has been suspended from his post for the course of the investigation.

The President's motorcade was obstructed by opposition supporters while police were also present in front of the PPM office. Some people have been expressing concerns on social media about the security of the President as his motorcade was easily intercepted. Some people said that the incident occurred because the security forces failed to maintain security.
