Jumhooree Party (JP)'s leader Gasim Ibrahim has expressed concern that members who leave the party defame the party.
Although a part of the ruling coalition, JP has decided to contest the upcoming presidential election separately and lead a coalition of its own. In the wake of the decision, several senior members of the party have left the party to continue to support President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the election. Some key party members who left the party include the Minister at the President's Office, Ahmed Sameer, Immigration Controller Mohamed Ahmed Hussain (Hanafy), MWSC's Managing Director Hassan Shah, MTCC's CEO Adam Azim, Deputy Minister of the Higher Education Ministry Aiminath Mohamed Saleem, and Deputy Minister of Arts, Waleedha Waleed. Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has also endorsed Presiden Solih for a second term of office.
In a tweet posted on Saturday, Gasim said some JP members in government positions were defaming the party and its leadership in order to defend their positions. He suggested such members take a more direct approach by announcing that they were resigning from the party for the sake of their government positions.
