JP invites five parties to form coalition

The Jumhooree Party (JP) has invited five parties to form a coalition with the party for the upcoming presidential election.

Although a part of the ruling coalition, JP has decided to contest the upcoming presidential election separately and lead its own coalition.

In this regard, invitations signed by party leader Qasim Ibrahim were sent to the largest opposition party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom's Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), MP Mohamed Nazim's Maldives National Party (MNP), former Attorney General Dr. Mohamed Munawwar, and former Home Minister Umar Naseer. Of these, all but MRM have announced their intent to contest the September presidential election.

PPM, MNP, and Umar Naseer have said they have no intention of forming a coalition with another party. Qasim is currently working with the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) 's deviated faction, 'Fikuregge Dhirun' led by Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Meanwhile, Adhaalath Party and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) have formed an alliance with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih backing his re-election for a second term.
