MDP Chairperson warns action against members working to "sabotage" party candidate

MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has expressed disapproval over alleged attempts by the party's Fikuregge Dhirun faction to sabotage the Guraidhoo by-election for MDP candidate Ibrahim Shaaz.

The main-ruling MDP is seeing internal division like never before, with one wing supporting President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the other, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. Following the party's presidential primary in February, Nasheed's 'Fikuregge Dhirun' faction has been actively working as a separate wing of the party and against President Solih. President Nasheed and his team are in talks with Jumhooree Party to work together to win the upcoming presidential election.

While the Guraidhoo constituency by-election, contested by MDP, MNP, and PPM, is today, MDP's Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail sent a warning to the party's National Assembly Whatsapp Group on Friday, threatening action against those who anti-campaign for the party's candidate. Although the message did not name any person, it is believed to be a warning to Nasheed and his team.

In his message, Fayyaz said some senior MDP members have been asking voters not to vote for the party ticket. He said he strongly condemned the action of these members.

Fayyaz said the "tantrum" over the presidential ticket has now reached a "completely new level" and that some were trying to shatter the MDP deliberately. He said with god's will, he would not let their attempts become successful. Ending the message, he said there was a certain point up until he could remain quiet "out of respect".
