Electricity consumption reaches record amount

STELCO has said that a record amount of electricity was consumed in Male' City on Monday.

The record power consumption comes as the Met Office has repeatedly warned the public to be vigilant against the heat as this is the hottest month experienced in the country.

According to STELCO, the peak-load had reached more than 102 MW at 2:10 pm on Monday. Stelco has the capacity to generate 120 MW of electricity in the Male' area.

"All parties are urged to pay special attention to saving electricity," STELCO said in a statement.

In order to save electricity, STELCO has asked households, government agencies, government ministries, offices, schools, as well as large and small businesses to use electricity only as much as necessary.

The utility company said research shows that appliances such as air conditioners account for 40 percent of the average household's electricity bill. Therefore, all parties should pay attention to keeping the air conditioning above 25°C, said STELCO.

"We urge you to limit using electrical appliances and use essential lighting in this period. This company needs the cooperation and assistance of all parties to handle the peak during these days," STELCO said.

The weather bureau has also advised the public to take measures to protect themselves from the heat.
