Tourist arrival number crosses 700,000

The number of tourists that have visited the Maldives thus far this year has crossed 700,000.

According to the Tourism Ministry, 710,645 tourists visited the Maldives as of May 5. This is a 17.5 percent increase over the 640,730 tourists who visited during the same period last year and a 6.4 percent increase compared to the pre-covid numbers from the same period in 2019. In 2019, 667,729 tourists visited the Maldives during the same duration.

The number of tourists visiting the country in the first five days of May declined by 19.9 percent compared to the same period last year. However, the number of tourists in the first five days of May this year increased by 3.3 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

China, which was the top tourism source market before the COVID-19 pandemic, is now climbing up the top source market list, the Tourism Ministry said. Currently, China ranks sixth in the tourism market, with a share of 4.7 percent of tourist arrivals so far this year.
