No-confidence motion moved against AG Riffath

A no-confidence motion has been moved against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath.

The motion was signed by Parliament members from the main opposition PPM, MNP, JP and MDP MPs loyal to Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. Although Kendhoo MP Ali Hussain is among those that signed the motion from JP, it is unclear whether JP leader Qasim Ibrahim signed the motion.

Speaking at a press conference held today, the Parliament's minority leader and PPM's PG leader, MP Ahmed Saleem, said although only Riffath's case was filed today, more such motions would be filed in the upcoming days. He said the main opposition would move the impeachment of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.

MP Saleem pointed out that the no-confidence motion was triggered by the government's "selling" of part of the disputed territorial waters to Mauritius. He stressed that there are certain things that cannot be let go of when it comes to the country and its borders. Saleem emphasized that regardless of which government or political party is in power, everyone should recognize what can and cannot be done in the country.

Saleem added that those in power should not act for their own benefit or betray the religion and the country. He stated that the people of the Maldives entrust their country to someone to govern the country in good faith.

Saleem further underscored that the number of issues related to the Maldives' territory indicates how much the people think about their international border. He also reminded the government that the people are well aware of the Chagos issue. Saleem said that the Maldives is witnessing people in power doing whatever they want, and those who act that way should be afraid of their actions.

"We will do everything in our power to reclaim the territory we lost. We will not give in even an inch. We will continue this struggle till our last breath. This is not a game. We are not afraid of whatever action is taken against us," he said.
