MVR 20k spent per prisoner every month

The Maldives Correctional Service spends around MVR 20,000 per month on each prisoner.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the ninth batch of officers of the Custodial Management and Security Program on Friday, Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu highlighted the increasing expenses associated with prisoners. He emphasized the need for prisoner cooperation to achieve desired outcomes while acknowledging the efforts of corrections officers.

CP Ahmed said prisoner costs are increasing year by year. He said a significant portion of the expenditure was dedicated to reintegration, reflecting the government's commitment to reforms.

The CP added that the government is working to reduce the cost of prisoners and strengthen the management of prisons.

Upon assuming office, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih conducted a special audit of prisons for the first time. The government is working in a phased approach to address and resolve the issues identified during the audit.
