Ballot boxes to be placed in eight countries, 15 invited to observe electoral process

The Election Commission (EC) has decided to place ballot boxes for the upcoming presidential election in 8 countries, with an additional 15 countries invited to observe the electoral process.

Election Commission's Vice-President Ismail Habeeb said ballot boxes would be placed in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, UAE, Japan, and the UK. Ballot boxes will be placed after at least 150 people register for voting, he said.

The fifteen countries that have been invited to observe the September elections are:

Bosnia and Herzegovina - Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Australia - Australian Electoral Commission
Jordan - Independent Election Commission
Canada - Canadian Elections
Japan - Secretariat to Election Administration Commission of Japan
Nepal - Election Commission of Nepal

The first round of the presidential election is scheduled for September 9. This year, 282,755 people are eligible to vote in the election: 144,408 males and 138,347 females.

The MDP, PPM, JP, MNP, and newly emerging party, The Democrats, have announced their intention to contest the presidential election. Former Home Minister Umar Naseer and former Attorney General Dr. Mohamed Munawwar have also said they would contest the election as independent candidates.
