EPA fines Male' City Council by MVR 45,000

The Male' City Council has been fined MVR 45,000 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for illegally dumping garbage on council-owned land.

The EPA said it received multiple complaints from the public regarding the City Council dumping waste on a land behind the Edhuru Hiyaa flats. In a statement released on Thursday, the EPA confirmed that their staff visited the site on several occasions to investigate the complaints. The City Council claimed that the dumped garbage consisted of waste collected from public spaces in the city and was disposed of the following morning.

The EPA has ordered the fine to be paid within 30 days, including public holidays. The agency has also instructed the council to seek permission if it intends to engage in waste management activities.
