The main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has requested that the no-confidence motion against Parliament's Deputy Speaker, Eva Abdulla, be included on Monday's agenda
Eva Abdulla recently left the MDP and has been actively involved in establishing a new political party. In response, the MDP initiated a no-confidence motion against Eva and submitted it to the Parliament on May 23. 50 MDP members signed the petition to remove Eva from the post.
After the no-confidence motion against Eva was put on the agenda, it was later withdrawn, as the reconstitution of the parliamentary committees remained pending. When the motion was removed from the agenda, the MDP said that no other work could be done in Parliament without taking up the no-confidence motion against Eva.
In a letter addressed to the Parliament's Secretary General, Fathimath Niusha, the MDP Parliamentary Group leader and Hithadhoo North MP, Mohamed Aslam, stated that there were no circumstances in the Parliament rules that excluded the inclusion of the no-confidence motion on the agenda. The letter further emphasized that within three days of receipt, a no-confidence motion against the Speaker or Deputy Speaker must be submitted to the session 14 days from the notice date.
