MDP PG convenes with SG to address parliamentary deadlock

The MDP Parliamentary Group has met with the Secretary General of the Parliament, Fathimath Niusha, to discuss how to navigate the current parliamentary deadlock.

An MP representing the main-ruling MDP said the party's Parliamentary Group Leader and Hithadhoo North MP Mohamed Aslam met with Secretary General Niusha and senior administrative staff of the Parliament. The meeting discussed the removal of obstacles that hinder the conduct of parliamentary sessions and the reconstitution of parliamentary committees. The obstacles to the no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah were also discussed.

The MDP is pursuing a no-confidence motion against Eva, and while the 14-day notice period to respond to the motion has expired, the motion is yet to be placed on the Parliament's agenda. Pro-government MPs have expressed their displeasure with the delay.

The Parliament had earlier said that the current no-confidence motions would require reconstituting the committees, as the General Committee determines the timeframe for such motions. The reconstitution of the General Committee is also necessary.

However, Aslam said the committees can continue as they are, and the necessary changes would still be made to the committee. If there is any difficulty in conducting the General Committee, the Secretary-General can call a meeting of the General Committee, and the Secretary-General can resolve the issue, Aslam said.
