Ex-PPM loyalist, Ghalib joins main-ruling MDP

Former PPM Senate member and its Kelaa constituency president, Ahmed Ghalib, has joined the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Ghalib left the PPM earlier this month, citing an unsuitable environment within the party as his reason.

On Tuesday, in the presence of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, MDP Chairperson and Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, as well as Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer, Ghalib officially became a member of the MDP. President Solih personally received Ghalib's membership form.

Ghalib said that he joined the MDP along with several family members from his birthplace of Vashafaru and island residents. He emphasized that this day marks the beginning of the process to transition the Kela constituency, which includes Vashafaru, into MDP territory before the upcoming September presidential election.

Lauding President Solih, Ghalib said that the president had proved his ability to make and fulfill promises. He said the president should be re-elected for a second term for this reason.

Ghalib shares family ties with Jumhooree Party (JP)'s Secretary General and former Kela Constituency MP Ali Arif, JP's Deputy Leader Iqbal Adam, and Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
