Green Fund balance at MVR 988 mln at the end of May

The Green Fund stood at MVR 988 million at the end of May this year.

According to the latest report released by the Finance Ministry, the Green Fund reached a total of MVR 988 million by the end of May this year. This amount includes MVR 774 million carried over from last year's balance and an additional MVR 214 million from this year's Green Fund balance as of May.

The Green Fund received a total of MVR 476 million as of May this year while spending MVR 261 million during the same period.

During the month of May, the Green Fund received a total of MVR 83 million. The highest income in May came from K atoll, with a sum of MVR 29 million, while Raa atoll contributed MVR 8.2 million. The Green Fund utilized MVR 7.4 million in May this year.

The government introduced the Green Tax in October 2016 to gather funds to tackle environmental issues in the Maldives under the Green Fund. The Green Fund's projects include beach protection, water and sewerage, and waste management projects. USD 3 is charged as Green Tax per tourist at local guest houses, and USD 6 is charged per head at other tourism service providers.
