EC receives over 500 complaints regarding permanent voters' list

The Elections Commission (EC) has received a total of 551 complaints regarding the permanent voters list for the upcoming presidential election.

The EC publicized the voters' list on June 11 and set the deadline for submitting complaints until 3:00 pm yesterday.

According to the EC, the majority of complaints, with 465 complaints, were filed against the inclusion of deceased persons in the list. Additionally, 58 complaints related to change of address, 19 complaints for missing names, five complaints for change of name, three complaints for change of constituency, and one complaint regarding change of ID card details were also submitted.

Re-registration for the election is scheduled to open on July 16. The EC has earlier said that it is making arrangements to have an online re-registration option to streamline the re-registration process.

The first round of the presidential election is scheduled for September 9 this year. If a second round is necessary, voting is scheduled for September 30. The opportunity to apply to contest the election will be open from July 23 to August 3.

The MDP has handed over its presidential tickets to its leader, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Meanwhile, coalition partner Jumhooree Party has decided to contest the election separately and has named its President, Qasim Ibrahim as its presidential candidate. The Maldives National Party (MNP) will put forward its President Mohamed Nazim as its candidate, while the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has handed over its ticket to their leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyoom. However, Yameen is currently ineligible to contest the election due to a conviction and can only participate if a higher court overturns the lower court's sentence.

Additionally, former Home Minister Umar Naseer and former Attorney General Dr. Mohamed Munawwar have also said they would contest the election.
