The allocation of members to the standing committees of Parliament according to party representation has been officially approved.
During an extraordinary session of Parliament held today, the opposition MPs put forward ten amendments to the reconstitution of the standing committees. However, these amendments were rejected. The voting results showed that 35 members voted in favor of approving the proposed composition of members in the standing committees, while 14 members voted against it.
Vilufushi MP Hasan Afeef, who was presiding over the session, said the names of the members to be appointed to the standing committees should be sent before 9:00 pm today. Afeef said the Speaker would appoint independent members to the committees.
According to the ratio of party members represented in standing committees, the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) gets 113 slots, which accounts for 62 percent of committee seats. The distribution of committee slots for other parties is as follows:
PPM - 11 slots - six percent
PNC - 7 slots - three percent
MNP - 7 slots - three percent
JP - 5 slots - two percent
MDA - 5 slots - two percent
Additionally, there will be 35 slots reserved for independent members, constituting 21 percent of the total committee seats.
