Jailed ex-pres signs candidacy papers to contest election

The main opposition leader and the PPM-PNC presidential candidate, former President Abdulla Yameen, has signed his candidacy form to contest the upcoming presidential election.

Yameen is facing an 11-year prison sentence due to money laundering and bribery convictions, rendering him ineligible to run in the September election. His candidacy hinges on a higher court quashing the lower court verdict. Despite this setback, the opposition is confident that Yameen's name would appear on the ballot paper.

In a recent development, when the Election Commission opened the submission of candidacy papers of those interested in contesting the election, the PPM-PNC coalition began work to prepare Yameen's papers and requested the assistance of Maldives Correctional Services to obtain Yameen's signature on the documents.

Speaking to AVAS, a senior PPM official said the documents have now been signed by Yameen and that they had been received by the PPM Office through Corrections. Therefore, it is believed that the party would do the needful to ensure the timely submission of the documents.
