Ex-pres Yameen attends PPM meeting following amended house arrest terms

Former Maldives President and President of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom met with some PPM members on Sunday.

This is the first time he has attended a PPM meeting and met with the party's general members since his 11-year jail sentence handed last year. The meeting was arranged after Maldives Correctional Service amended his current home arrest to allow movement within Male' City "for medical purposes and other important matters" on Saturday. It is reported that he does not have permission to meet with the media.

The informal meeting was held at the PPM headquarters in Male' City on Sunday night. While the media was not invited to the event, PPM-affiliated Channel 13 livestreamed the event, although the audio was muted.

Channel 13 reported that at Sunday's meeting, Yameen expressed his intention to meet the public at an upcoming PPM-organized mass rally.

The Criminal Court found Yameen guilty of money laundering and bribery on December 25, 2022. He was transferred to home arrest by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on October 1 this year, after the incumbent was defeated in the presidential election and at the request of the President-elect, PPM-PNC's Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
