The Democrats have approved Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb as their presidential candidate.
Ilyas was the only applicant for the Democrats' presidential primary. According to The Democrats' constitution, if a single candidate runs in the primary, the candidate must receive 10 percent of the vote.
Across the country, 3,208 people voted in The Democrats’ presidential primary on Friday. Of these, 3,041 voted to grant the Democrats' presidential ticket to Ilyas. However, 153 people voted against his candidacy, and nine votes were deemed invalid.
The Democrats is a newly established political party formed by former senior members of the Maldivian Democratic Party who decided to part ways from the main-ruling party. Despite being a new party, The Democrats express great confidence in their ability to secure victory in the upcoming September presidential election.
