Investigating 'Hassan Kurusee' Twitter account at Nasheed's request: Police

Police have said they are working to identify the owner of the "@Hassan Kurusee" Twitter handle in connection with a complaint filed by Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

The @HassanKurusee Twitter account is a verified account on the popular social media platform. The account frequently publishes tweets criticizing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Cabinet ministers, and some parliament members and leaks important confidential information of the state.

While the police have obtained an order from the Criminal Court to identify those behind the Twitter account, the authority was asked by the media what prompted the efforts to identify those behind the account. In response, the police said it was in connection with a case filed by Nasheed.

"Hassan Kurusee" is a fictional character in some of Nasheed's writings. Earlier this year, on April 17, Nasheed requested the police identify the people behind the @HassanKurusee Twitter handle. In a letter addressed to Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed, Nasheed said the Twitter account causes confusion among the public, with many assuming its association with Nasheed himself, adding that he was suffering immensely as a result. He, therefore, requested the commissioner to look into the account.
