PNC to contest the presidential election

The Peoples' National Congress (PNC) has decided to contest the upcoming presidential election.

The PNC decided to contest the presidential election with a majority of 44 out of 47 members present at the party's consultative council meeting held today, voting in favour of the move.

The opportunity to submit the application to contest for the PNC presidential ticket is open until 2:00 pm today. Among those expressing interest in the ticket are Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Maduvveri MP Adam Shareef. A meeting has been scheduled for 4:00 pm today to determine the party's candidate.

The PNC has decided to contest the presidential election following the guidance of the main opposition leader and PM-NC presidential candidate, former president Abdulla Yameen. Yameen's instructions were prompted by the Election Commission's rejection of Yameen's candidacy papers, citing his ongoing 11-year prison sentence as the basis for the decision.

The Election Commission’s decision has been appealed to the Supreme Court.
