EC receives nearly 30,000 voter re-registration forms

The Election Commission (EC) has received 29,951 forms for re-registration of voters in islands other than their registered islands.

Combining the online and paper submissions for the upcoming presidential election, a total of 24,370 re-registered voters have been recorded, with 5,544 applications being deemed ineligible.

Political parties contributed 1,318 forms, out of which 1,142 were accepted, and the remaining 176 forms were rejected. Furthermore, 959 prisoners successfully completed the re-registration process.

The deadline for online re-registration expired at 0000hrs on Wednesday. While a total of 22,056 online forms were received before the deadline, 17,453 forms have been registered. Meanwhile, 4603 forms were rejected for various reasons, including expired ID cards and duplicates from those who had already registered in Male' City during the previous election.

Although The online re-registration deadline has expired, paper forms can be submitted until next Saturday. The EC has underlined the importance of timely completion of the re-registration process and has made the re-registered voter details accessible on its official website.

Although the Election Commission tried to set up nine ballot boxes in eight countries for the presidential election, current re-registration numbers show enough voters re-registered to set up ballot boxes in four countries: India, Malaysia, the UK, and Sri Lanka.

The presidential election is slated for September 30. If a second round of voting is required, the vote will be held on September 30.
