Ex-pres Yameen abstains from re-registering to vote in election

PPM President and opposition leader, former President Abdullah Yameen, has not re-registered to vote in the upcoming presidential election.

Currently serving an 11-year prison term for a conviction involving bribery and money laundering, Yameen traditionally cast his vote at the designated polling station tied to his permanent address, Ma. Kaamineege Hulhunagu Bai.

A PPM senior official has confirmed to AVAS that their leader has not re-registered to vote at the prison where he is serving his sentence. He said the decision stems from the fact that neither Yameen nor the party believes he is a prisoner. Their rationale is rooted in the belief that if court proceedings concerning President Yameen had proceeded as they should have, he would already be free.

President Yameen asked PPM-PNC senators to boycott the upcoming presidential election after the Supreme Court ruled that he could not contest the presidential election due to his conviction. However, the majority of PPM-PNC senators decided not to boycott the election, a decision that was not initially accepted by Yameen. However, after considerable persuasion, Yameen ultimately agreed to let Male' Mayor Dr. MOhamed Muizzu contest on the PPM-PNC ticket.
